Help with HIV Medications

A reader recently wrote asking how to find affordable HIV medications. According to the American Academy of HIV Medicine, this is a common problem. The federal government funds AIDS Drug Assistance Programs in each state. However, over the past several years these programs have suffered from budget constraints, resulting in tougher eligibility criteria. Ohio’s program is here. It includes help with insurance premiums as well as help with prescription drugs for those who qualify.
The Ohio state run drug assistance program covers these drugs. For patients who take medication not included in the state run formulary, drug companies often offer direct patient assistance programs. The Partnership for Perscription Assistance has contact information and a list medications by drug company at their website.
If you live in a state other than Ohio, the US Department of Health and Human Services has a website devoted to HIV assistance with contact information for each state’s program.

Because healthcare information changes rapidly, you should always verify information with your providers.
